Topic: The main objective of GreenCarbon is to develop new scientific knowledge, capability, technology and commercial products for biomass-derived carbons (BCs), thus impacting the way Europe uses and innovates with sustainable carbon materials. The research program of GreenCarbon comprehensively covers all aspects from precursors (the nature of biomass) to processing (thermochemical conversion, porosity development, chemical functionalization) and application (e.g., CO2 capture, heterogeneous catalysis and chemicals from biomass) enabling a unique design of engineered sustainable BC materials. At the same time, the training program of GreenCarbon is designed with the aim to empower the ESRs through the provision of a comprehensive and coherent training package, which includes complementary competencies and knowledge in all the science, engineering and business skills so as to be capable of deploying new technologies within different environments both inside and outside of academia.

Topic: The main objective of the project is to demonstrate solutions that support the transition from a treatment plant for urban wastewater to a production unit of different valuables.
Tasks of AVA: HTCycle GmbH successfully tested on pilot plant and industrial scale the carbonization of sewage sludge from several sewage sludge plants of Belgium Aquafin. The results showed excellent coal quality, the complete destruction of pharmaceuticals and a high yield rate (>90%) for the recovery of phosphate. The Life Cycle analysis proved the environmental and economic viability of the concept.

Topic: The overall objective of BioBoost is to pave the way for decentral conversion of residual biomass to optimized and high energy density carriers, which can be utilized in large-scale applications for the synthesis of transportation fuel and chemicals or directly in all-scale combined heat and power (CHP) plants.
Tasks of AVA: HTCycle GmbH successfully tested on pilot plant and industrial scale the carbonization of organic household waste streams. The resulting coal showed excellent burning values. The Life Cycle analysis proved the environmental and economic viability of the concept.
